CAB Q3 Researcher Workbench Workshop

The purpose of this workspace is to provide an overview of the Researcher Workbench functionality (Cohort Builder and Dataset Builder) to the Research Hub's Community Advisory Board (CAB) members for education and training purposes.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

The purpose of this workspace is to provide an overview of the Researcher Workbench functionality (Cohort Builder and Dataset Builder) to the Research Hub's Community Advisory Board (CAB) members for education and training purposes.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Educational

Scientific Approaches

The Research Support team will demonstrate how to find concepts on the Researcher Workbench using a use case of sickle cell trait to create a case and control cohort. The goal of this project is to highlight the capabilities of the Cohort Builder, Cohort Review, and Dataset Builder, as well as have CAB members learn more about All of Us data structure.

Anticipated Findings

There are no anticipated findings from this study; this project is used for education and training purposes only. After the workshop, we hope the CAB members will have a basic understanding of how to create a cohort and dataset within the Researcher Workbench. Dissemination of this workspace and related cohorts, datasets, and notebooks will be for DRC operational use only.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Educational

Scientific Approaches

A cohort of individuals with hypertension will be first built. Concept sets include education, income, and geographic state will be selected. Then a dataset will be built based on these concept sets for this cohort.

Anticipated Findings

The dataset of hypertension individuals will be built. The distribution of educations, incomes and geographic states of the individuals in this cohort can be analyzed later.

The proposed analyses aim to describe the correlation and covariance of available measures across different subgroups to gain a better understanding of how these measures are related in terms of data quality and validity.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Other Purpose (AoU operational use)

Scientific Approaches

Survey data and aggregated results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses will be used to assess psychometric characteristics of measures across different socio-demographic variables.

Anticipated Findings

Findings of proposed analyses can help advancing our understanding of how survey data are related and can inform the data quality framework and planned activities to enhance the value of AoU data, and to ensure that we have fit-for-purpose data quality requirements to support CDR releases.

Duplication of racism during the pandemic: Mental health among Asian Americans

Scientific Questions Being Studied

This workspace aims to duplicate findings in Chae et al. (2021) study on racism and depressive symptomology among Asian Americans during the COVID19 pandemic. "Experiences of vicarious racism—hearing about racism directed toward one’s racial group or racist acts committed against other racial group members—and vigilance about racial discrimination have been salient during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Chae, D. H., Yip, T., Martz, C. D., Chung, K., Richeson, J. A., Hajat, A., ... & LaVeist, T. A. (2021). Vicarious racism and vigilance during the COVID-19 pandemic: mental health implications among Asian and Black Americans. Public Health Reports, 136(4), 508-517.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Educational

Scientific Approaches

We improve upon Chae et al. (2021) study by using a longitudinal study of Asian American adults aged ≥18 in the United States recruited from the All of Us Research Program. We will us the COPE survey to examine mental health. Example questions of interest include:

In the past 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by: Little interest or pleasure in doing things
In the past 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by: Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless
In your day-to-day life, how often did this happen to you during the past month? You are threatened or harassed
In your day-to-day life, how often did this happen to you during the past month? People act as if they are afraid of you

Multivariable linear regression models examined levels of depression and anxiety by self- reported vicarious racism and vigilance.

Anticipated Findings

"Mental health problems are a pressing concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results from our study suggest that heightened racist sentiment, harassment, and violence against Asian contribute to increased risk of depression and anxiety via vicarious racism and vigilance. Public health efforts during this period should address endemic racism as well as COVID-19."
