Scientific Questions Being Studied

All of Us collects anthropomorphic data (ex. Height, Weight etc.) from a variety of different sources, including program physical measurements and data from Electronic Medical Records (EHR). The goal of this project is to compare the distribution of participant heights collected via program physical measurements to that collected from electronic medical records.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Methods Development
  • Other Purpose (This data will be used for demonstration and training purposes)

Scientific Approaches

We plan to subset the data by selecting All of Us participants who have contributed height data via both physical measurements and Electronic Medical Records (EHR). We will then create a dataset containing demographic and height data, conduct basic cohort characterization, and plot a comparison of height from both sources.

Anticipated Findings

We anticipate that height data from both sources will have similar distributions.

This study will not center on underrepresented populations.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

Are there any shared behaviors to adults who develop asthma in adulthood as opposed to developing it as a child? Do adults who develop asthma in adulthood have other medical conditions or behavior in common? Do certain habits lead to developing asthma in adulthood, especially if there is a history of illness, such as bronchitis, throughout early life?

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (asthma)
  • Population Health
  • Social / Behavioral
  • Ancestry

Scientific Approaches

I will use longitudinal surveys as well as EHR data for this study. This work will look at patients' behaviors through their survey answers and look at conditions they develop as adults through their EHR data.

Anticipated Findings

This study is exploratory, but I anticipate there are correlating behaviors for many of the populations being studied such as any changes to their diet and exercise habits over the years. I anticipate seeing the decrease of exercise can lead to the increase chances of developing asthma, especially if there is a history of lung-related illnesses such as bronchitis.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

What are the social/behavioral aspects affecting women with major depressive disorder?

What are the drugs/ therapeutic approaches taken for treatment of major depressive disorder in women?

What are the short term and long term affects of treatment and non-treatment for women with major depressive disorder?

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (major depressive disorder)
  • Population Health
  • Social / Behavioral
  • Drug Development
  • Methods Development
  • Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI)

Scientific Approaches

Methods are to scan datasets for answers to the three questions above by analyzing social/behavioral patterns of the women affected, drug treatment choices provided, treatment and non-treatment affects as well as any short term and long term affects women have as a result of taking drugs or opting to go a more naturalistic route with treatment, as well as those who choose not to be treated at all.

Anticipated Findings

Anticipated findings are better therapeutic management of treatment with natural or prescription drugs as well as any social/behavioral patterns that aid in diagnosis or treatment of this condition for women.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

How are breast cancer subtypes influenced by viruses in underrepresented communities?
Why are the mortality rates of African Americans with aggressive breast cancer subtypes higher than their counterparts?
What lifestyle behaviors contribute to aggressive breast cancers in African Americans?
What differentially expressed gene networks assist in the pathology and progression of breast cancer subtypes for African Americans?
Overtime how are African Americans disproportionately affected by access to healthcare, costs for aggressive treatment, and quality of life care?

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (breast cancer)
  • Population Health
  • Social / Behavioral
  • Drug Development
  • Methods Development
  • Control Set
  • Ancestry
  • Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI)

Scientific Approaches

Controlled study comparisons, GWAS study comparisons, demographic comparisons over the last 10 years for each breast cancer subtype, and map out differentially expressed profiles for each breast cancer subtype that directly aids in disease progression or pathology.

Anticipated Findings

That there will be mostly epigenetic behaviors and specific gene networks working in tandem to aid in disease progression. These findings would explain or answer most of the questions posed and possibly create a few precision medicine approaches specifically for the more aggressive breast cancer subtypes without solely depending on more invasive aggressive treatment options. Also the findings could make for a better quality of life for persons with the subtype of breast cancer or possibly prevent it (whether it be genetically or by life style changes).

If transplanted islets are housed in crosslinked PEG / Alginate hydrogels, will participants return to normoglycemic levels?

Scientific Questions Being Studied

If transplanted islets are housed in crosslinked PEG / Alginate hydrogels, will participants return to normoglycemic levels?

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (Type 1 Diabetes Meletus )

Scientific Approaches

- Each group will be read for glycemic levels three times per day, morning, immediately after eating and two hours after eating.
- Glycemic levels will be tested using blood glucose tests.
- After 60 days the islets will be removed and analyzed for growth fouling.

Anticipated Findings

The anticipated findings are the participants with transplanted islets housed in crosslinked PEG / Alginate hydrogels will return to normoglycemic levels and stay at those levels until removal of the islets. The hydrogels will also have minimal to no growth fouling on the surface, hindering islet function. These findings will help advance the treatment to T1DM.
